College funding debate brews; proposed cuts could cost MSU $11 million

Some lawmakers expressed concerns Monday about the impact on institutions of higher education if there is another year of major funding cuts and no tuition increases.

Last week, Gov. Jay Nixon urged university and college officials not to use large tuition increases to offset a proposed reduction of $106 million in state funding. If the latest proposal is included, higher education aid will have been cut by 25 percent over the last three years.

“That is really not something we desire,” said Linda Luebbering, the state budget director. “It is due to lack of revenue.”

German automotive plant to open in Dublin

DUBLIN, Ga. (AP) — Gov. Nathan Deal says a $39 million German automotive plant will open in Dublin.

The Courier Herald in Dublin reports that Munich-based Erdrich Umformtechnik GmbH amp; Co.KG will bring 178 jobs to the area. The 130,000-square-foot metal stamping facility will be Erdrichs first US plant.

Erdrich is a family-owned company that manufactures complex metal parts for the automotive industry. The company will work with the states workforce training program, Quick Start, to get new employees ready for the plants 2013 opening.

On Monday, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers filed an appeal of Denver District Judge Sheila Rappaports landmark ruling on school funding in the Lobato v. State of Colorado case, 9News reports.

There were several reasons Suthers office claims that Rappapports decision was in error, but one of the main concerns Suthers had was with the judges exclusion of allowing the state to use the Taxpayers Bill of Rights (TABOR) in its defense of how it funds education. TABOR restricts revenues for all levels of government (including schools) and requires a public vote for tax increases.
